There are Three Greek Words in Chapter 4 , we should look at:

1. 'Rest' This word 'katapausin'  is used mainly to refer to people entering (but most people have not been entering) GOD's rest.

4:1 His Rest       4:3 rest       4:3 My Rest

4:4 Rest of GOD       4:5 My Rest

       4:8 rest       4:10 His Rest       4:11 rest

2. 'Seventh Day' Refers to Creation Ceasing on 'The Seventh Day GOD did Rest' and entered into relationship with Adam & Eve

      4:4  seventh      4:4  seventh day

3. There ‘Remaineth a Rest' The Word 'Rest' is "Sabbatismos" and is used only here and in Exo 16:30 in The Septuagint Translation.

4:9 “There remaineth therefore a rest to the Children of God”

The Group involved in Exo 16:30 was Family - and Community

Note - Exo 16 is given before the 10 Commandments and yet this 'Rest remains' for 'The People of GOD.'   This is an eternal idea – Given Before The Law and it remains today for GOD’s Children....

In Heb 4:9 we are given The Rest (Sabbatismos) that remains for The Children of GOD. At the end of Chapter 4, Hebrews shows the 9 differences between Soul and Spirit - this points out the need for Rest within our Relationship in GOD. See the following Diagram Dividing Soul and Spirit.

Heb 3 & 4 reveals a rest or relationship with The LORD that provides Security, Peace and Rest for The natural and Spiritual Man. Warnings against ‘an evil heart of unbelief 3:12, ‘turning away from The Living GOD’ 3:12, and ‘be careful to Hear HIS VOICE’ 3:14. GOD wants believers to ‘share in The Heavenly Calling’ 3:1, and ‘in The Holy Spirit’ 4:12.

4:1-11 GOD’s Rest is not just Earthly but also Heavenly - HE desires, promises and Commands Rest, and it’s not grievous, but flesh does not lay down easily....

4:1-11 The Rest and Gospel preached to them related to The Promised Land but more so To The LORD, that Rest at Sinai, was not just a stop-over. God tied His Commandments to a Marriage Relationship. This was GOD’s  expectation at Sinai. But they fell short and died in the wilderness of sin.... The Promised Land was a place (a Type) where Israel might come into Relationship with GOD.

In the last few verses of Hebrews 4, the writer begins to deal with the inner nature of Soul and Spirit!!!

Soul and Spirit

The similarity of the two New Testament Greek words: Psoo-khay-‘Soul'-to breath;  and Pnoo-mah- ‘Spirit'- wind, breath – is remarkable. But more remarkable still, are the Differences Between The Soul and The Spirit.
