This passage illustrates the need to warn fellow Christians when they are ignoring the principles and commands of Scripture (verse 8-
It also shows us that godly sorrow (i.e. godly conviction):
... Stings our heart verses 8-
No one enjoys correction.(Also Heb 12:11)
... Leads to repentance v. 9.
Repentance means sincerely turning from sin.
... Doesn’t harm us or leave us with regret vv. 9-
We face it honestly and deal with it appropriately.
... Leads to an earnest desire to make things right v. 11.
We're willing to do the hard work of reconciliation and restitution.
... Restores trust, love, and fellowship vv. 12-
Worldly corrections produce opposite results:
Correction "stings" for a different reason: because we're sorry for being caught, not sorry for our sins. We may insincerely or temporarily repent. But we return to our sin and lose the trust, affection, and fellowship of others.
