                                   MATTHEW OVERVIEW

-Matthew writes to a Jewish audience because the Early Church, as we see in Acts, consisted mostly of Jewish Christians.

-He starts with Jesus' Genealogy which centers on Jesus' lineage through Abraham, Judah, and David. All to insure we understand Jesus was a Jew with a king's heritage and HE also is Immanuel -

 GOD with us - 1:23.

-Matthew quotes the Old Testament more than any of the other Gospel.  

He weaves in 'OT Fulfilled'* and *'NT Kingdom' themes and presents Jesus as the New Covenant Lawgiver with power to forgive sins because HE is full of Mercy 9:13, 12:7. Also 5:7, 9:27,15:22,17:15,20:30-31   

-Matthew reviews The 10 Commandments 10 times.* Each of the 10 Commandments is shown with New Strength and Purpose - Now they are Designed to Penetrate The New Born (John 3) Christian's Heart and Mind - Just like Moses, Jeremiah and Ezekiel had prophesied.

-Matthew reveals Jesus with greater authority than The Jewish Leaders 23:1-36 yet also with Greater Compassion towards any who will Believe in GOD's Only Son 3:16-17.  Jesus asks us to be Perfect 5:20-48 and HE offers help for believers because HIS burden is light 11:28-30, 20:28.

    Look through the pages in this section on Matthew…. His Gospel is the first book in The New Testament. Matthew reveals Jesus as The King who came from Heaven and He lived as a man here on Earth. HIS purpose was two fold:

1. Jesus’ life reveals Him as a sinless man, and The Son of God, born the son of David….

2. Jesus’ ultimate purpose is to provide the way to GOD. Mat 22:16

  –To accomplish these two purposes, He came to give His life as God’s perfect sacrifice….

Mat 1 Gives Jesus' Genealogy with Respect to HIS Kingly Lineage.  Joseph and Mary were descended through David.

 Mat includes Joseph the Husband of Mary (of 'whom' is feminine) Mat also includes 4 other women Tamar, Rahab and the wife of Uriah as well as Boaz's wife Ruth. (Two Hebrew texts of Matthew list Joseph as Mary's father. Thus the last 14 counting is more straight forward.)

David is included and the 3 Hebrew letters in his name 'DVD' = 14 or 4+6+4,  Mat stresses the 14 Generations - though the list leaves out names (between Rahab and Boaz for example) to enable the Three 14 listings. Mat 1:17 mentions the 14 Generations to stress the 3 Key divisions of Israel's history.     (Abraham to David  to Babylon  to Jesus)
