Rev 20:4 flows from Chapters 14 & 15  and from Rev 6 where there were souls under the throne pleading for God to finish His work. The same idea is expressed in Rev 11, where we see the 2 Witnesses slain, resurrected and then the kingdoms of the world become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ.

Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

With earlier references as our guide, we can better understand what Revelation 20:4 is saying:

- Saints will sit with Christ and judge as in 3:21

- Believers in Rev 14 are harvested with a sickle

they do not take the mark nor worship the beast

beheading in 20:4 is literally chopped off - it does not have the idea of head. Thus harvested rather than beheaded would tie in with Rev 14. Notice also the 2 witnesses in Rev 11 are slain but not beheaded.
