John 2 The Wedding and the Cleansing

John Chapter 2 continues the 7 Day Count from chapter one. Four days after the third day

brings us to the 7th Day (The Sabbath Day.) And there is a Wedding in The Little Town of

Cana in Galilee. The four days might also refer that it was the 4th day of the wedding.

These celebrations often continued for 7 days as we can see from two OT examples. (Jacob

allowed seven days for his first wife and Samson continued 7 days at his wedding.) Turning the

water into wine was the First of the 7 significant miracle signs in The Book of John.

(see the web pages on ‘Signs in John.’)

In the second half of John 2, Jesus is seen dramatically

casting out the money changers from The Temple Courts. John mentions this was a ‘sign’

also. Though no miracle takes place the action of Jesus violently upsetting the buying

and selling of sacrifice animals was significant. (The Cleansing of The Temple takes

place towards the end of Jesus’ Ministry in the other 3 Gospels.)

John places this ‘sign’ right after the wedding in Cana. The contrasts are obvious and

reflect those activities John writes in Revelation 17 and 19. The Mystery Harlot in Rev

17 is a house of merchandise in Rev 18 and in Rev 19 The Wedding Supper of The Lamb takes

place. Here in The Gospel of John, Jesus First Miracle in turning the water into wine is

peaceful and done very quietly. Like the first joining of the husband and wife. In

contrast, next comes the violence of Jesus’ jealousy over His Father’s House and His

Cleansing of the Temple…. John writes this is also a sign.

With this ‘sign’ and the other 9 miracle ‘signs’ in John, we have 10 events noted as

‘signs’ in John’s Gospel. These can be compared to the 10 Commandments perhaps. (Though I

will not undertake that comparison on this page.) Look under ‘10 Commands’ or in the pages

on John and The 10 Commands.

So then we have 2 very significant events in John Chapter 2, and John lists the cleansing

as being near a Passover. Look in Home > Bas Doc> Jesus> Years in Jesus Ministry for more details.
